World First with the Approval of the Nyngan Scandium Project

Posted by admin

EMC Metals Australia Pty Ltd (EMC) celebrates the approval of the Nyngan Scandium Project by the Department of Planning and Environment on 8 November 2016 – the only standalone Scandium mine in the world.

Scandium is considered to have the potential to be a game changer as a next generation material for use in the aviation and fuel cell industries which up to now has been hampered by limited and insecure supply.

The development consent will allow EMC to extract and process up to 175 000 tonnes per annum of high grade scandium ore to produce approximately 45 tonnes per annum of scandium oxide over a period of 21 years. Located approximately 20km west-southwest of Nyngan in Western NSW, the Nyngan Scandium Project will contribute significantly to the local and regional economy and generate employment of approximately 75 full time equivalent positions and injecting approximately $12.4 million annually within the Nyngan area and the Bogan Shire Local Government Area.

RW Corkery & Co’s Team (RWC) have assisted EMC and its predecessors since 2008 with our extensive experience in navigating NSW State legislation and managing the environmental approvals processes to deliver the appropriate level of environmental documentation. The Environmental Impact Statement for this State Significant project was prepared in a the very short period of 6 months, with development consent from the NSW Department of Planning and Environment assessed and granted in 4 ½ months from the end of the exhibition period.
RWC congratulates EMC for achieving this significant world first.
