Cudgen Lakes Sand Quarry Commences Extraction and Receives Approval for MOD2

The Cudgen Lakes Sand Quarry completed its first extraction campaign on 8 February 2018. The campaign involved the dredging and hydraulic transfer (via pipelines) of approximately 300 000m3 of sand to the nearby Cudgen Heights development, a 96 lot residential subdivision covering approximately 8.5ha. The sand was used to raise the ground level of Cudgen Heights in order to prevent inundation from Tweed River floods. The Cudgen Heights development is the first stage of the Gales-Kingscliff Pty Limited Master Plan which includes a range of civic, commercial, retail, residential, recreational and environmental projects across 220ha of strategically located land in the Chinderah/Cudgen/Kingscliff area. The Cudgen Lakes Sand Quarry is an integral component of the Master Plan and will ultimately provide a recreational lake and surrounding parklands. The first extraction campaign was undertaken without any environmental incidents or complaints.
RWC has worked with Gales-Kingscliff Pty Limited since 2003 to undertake environmental studies and to obtain the required approvals for the operation. Most recently, on 22 January 2019, Gales-Kingscliff Pty Limited received approval for its proposal (MOD2) to consolidate the extraction areas into a single lake. This will result in a range of benefits including a slightly reduced overall extraction footprint, reduced potential for air quality and noise impacts and an increased resource volume. It also provides the opportunity to bring forward future development plans, including recreational uses, on the lands to the north and east of the extraction area.
